Why Ecuador is the first question on everyone's lips. Quite frankly Ecuador provides everything we require and then some.
We searched many other places around the world before discovering this secure, enchanting, bio-diverse country. It is a place of spectacular beauty, incredible experiences, and cultural richness. In short it is the perfect location for The Ocean Rehab.
Ecuador is a small country about the size of Colorado with 4 very distinct geographical regions: the Costa Pacific coastal lowlands in the west, the Sierra Andes highlands in the center; the Oriente Amazon eastern lowland rain forest and the world famous Galapagos Islands 600 miles west of the coastline of Ecuador in the Pacific. Temperatures vary according to elevation and the location and you'll find tropical islands, towering snowcapped peaks, sandy beaches, and simmering jungles within hours of each other. As its name indicates, Ecuador, which is the Spanish word for equator, extends over both sides of the equator. It is bordered in the north by Colombia and in the east and south by Peru. The smallest of the Andean countries, Ecuador has the highest average population density in South America and the highest percentage of Native Americans or Indigenous populations.
The Ocean Rehab is built on a bluff(hill) overlooking a protected cove. The constant Pacific breeze keeps the temperature comfortable and many of our guests are surprised to discover that they need a light sweater or light jacket in the evenings. The sun shines daily even during the short rainy season and tropical plants grow prolifically on our property including bougainvillea, hibiscus, oleander and royal poinciana.
Being on the equator gives Ecuador 12 hours of daylight daily year round, and a perpetual springtime. There is a short dusk and absolutely spectacular sunsets.
Ecuador has an estimated 14 million people and a democratic form of government. The current president, Rafael Correa, received his doctorate in economics at the University of Illinois and the government is working hard to increase public services and job opportunities throughout the country. Foreigners are welcomed in Ecuador and although Spanish is the language the people are warm, friendly and helpful and many will practice their English skills as we try to speak Spanish with them. The second language of Ecuador is the Amerindian Quechua spoken by the Indigenous population which is quite vital and active in government especially regarding land-use and conservation. The majority of Ecuadoreans trace their ancestry to both the Indigenous cultures and the Spanish Conquistadors who arrived in the early 1600's. Proud of their heritage there are many local museums documenting the archeology of the pre-Columbian cultures that lived here as well as the contributions of the Roman Catholic Spanish. It is also one of the safest Countries in the world.
The Republic of Ecuador has three major cities. The capitol city of Quito is high in the mountains and is the first UNESCO World Heritage site. Guayaquil, where most of our clients arrive, is a thriving economic port. Cuenca, also a World Heritage site, is a cultural oasis of universities, museums and theaters. Closest to us is the city of Salinas, a seaside resort and site of many of our field trips for cultural attractions, water sports, and deep sea fishing.
